What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is an art and science that has been used for over 5000 years. It dates back to ancient China, India and Egypt, where it evolved as an integral component of mainstream health care.

Our worldview sits on the spectrum between the Sacred and the Secular.

The secular view holds that our bodies are created from random atoms and molecules and go back to nothing when we die. Scientific rationalism has worked to dissect and deconstruct and in the process, we have become walking heads, disconnected from our bodies. As the philosopher George Gurdjieff put it:

The evolution of man is the evolution of his consciousness. With objective consciousness, it is possible to see and feel the unity of everything. Attempts to connect these phenomena into some sort of system in a scientific or philosophical way lead to nothing because man cannot reconstruct the idea of the whole starting from separate facts.

Naturalist, John Muir captured the opposite perspective, the sacred view, in saying, “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.”

Richard Attenborough’s recent series, The Green Planet and documentaries like Fantastic Fungi, showcase the interconnectedness and profound mystery of the natural world. Reflexology holds that our physical, mental and emotional bodies work together.

The theory of reflexology is based on enhancing energy flow through all parts of the body by using a specific form of pressurised touch.

"The meridian points and reflex points in the feet are most likely endpoints of strain, the result of imbalance which transmits its difficulty in compensating pattern through the body to the surface.

Foot reflexes are peaks of strains… reflex points in the foot are simply points where gravitational strain inserts and comes together.

They are the end of the line we call balance.”

Foot Reflexology

The intention is to activate the flow of energy through more than 7000 nerve endings on the sole of the foot, through various pressing, pulsing, holding and kneading actions. Its most basic function is to stimulate the body’s own natural relaxation response.

Over two thousand years ago, the Roman historian Sallust said, “Harmony makes small things grow. Lack of it makes great things decay.”

As we exercise less and consume less nutrient-rich foods, our physical bodies take a hit. So too do the modern-day pressures and stresses of life deplete our mental and emotional well-being.

When there is stagnation of the vital life force in the body, it is felt as pain, stiffness, or weakness. When there is a free flow of vital life force in the body, it is felt as pleasure, agility and strength.

Reflexology does not diagnose or prescribe for illness; it aims to induce a sense of calm within the mind-body and promote an overall feeling of well-being.

Hand Reflexology

More than just a hand massage, this treatment focuses on pressure points along the hands correlating to specific zones in the body.

A reflexology session helps balance the body, encouraging its self-healing and regenerative abilities.

Sessions begin with essential oils and hot towel compresses applied to the hands to refresh and soothe aching muscles.

The therapist then engages reflexology points with hand and finger pressure to address the client’s unique concerns.

Reflexology is not just deeply relaxing but it can be used to address mental issues as well as physical, including digestive, circulatory and other problems.

Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology is a holistic healing modality based on the idea that reflexes, or specific points on the feet, hands and outer ears, correspond to the internal organs, glands and body parts. The application of specific pressure by a reflexologist’s hand, thumb and fingers to a reflex map resembling the corresponding organ or body part leads to relaxation responses.

Reflexology complements, rather than substitutes medical care. Studies have shown it can be beneficial for tension headaches, digestive disorders, insomnia, sinus allergies, back/neck/shoulder pain, PMS and stress-related conditions. As well as promoting deep relaxation, it can assist the body to detoxify by encouraging lymphatic drainage and the elimination of toxins trapped in the tissues.

Your session begin with a foot cleanse.

Next, I engage reflexology points with hand and finger pressure to address the unique needs of your body.

When there is tenderness or sensitivity in the hand or foot, it may indicate some congestion or blockage in the area to which this reflex corresponds. The objective is to work the reflex to lessen or dissipate the congestion. Working slowly and gently at first, there will be increasing pressure with regard to your tolerance and bodies requirements.

You may find that during your reflexology treatment, mental issues alleviate as well as physical, including digestive, circulatory and other problems.
